2011 CUP FINAL REPORTS
DUFFIELD HIT BACK TO STUN GRANGE
NORTH Duffield produced a storming comeback to beat higher-ranked opponents Woodhouse Grange in the Prendergast Memorial Cup final at Pocklington.
Needing 189 to win Grange were firmly in control at 136-2 before a dramatic middle order collapse put them behind the clock and fell short on 178-7.
It was a surprise triumph for North Duffield, who have endured two successive relegations and play in the third division of the HPH York Vale League, a division below Grange, who were punished for not taking their catches.
James Knibb was Duffield’s top batsman, striking nine boundaries on his way to 63. James Lacey contributed 28 from 20 balls and Nick Hatfield (23) put on a valuable 24 with last man David Buckley while 23 extras, mainly from wides and no balls, was to prove crucial.
Luke Phillipo was the outstanding bowler for Grange with figures of 9.2-1-45-6. It looked as though it would be a cakewalk for Grange as Ashley Cattle (21) and Stuart Craven (81) enjoyed a half-century opening partnership before Craven and Rob Daniel (40) took the score to 136-2 second-wicket partnership of 85.
The score advanced to 145 when John Patrick took a wicket with the last ball of his spell and Lacey snapped up two wickets from the first two deliveries of the next over to put Grange on the back foot.
They never really recovered as Lacey finished with 3-45 to support the accurate Patrick’s 2-25 from ten overs to secure Duffield an unexpected victory.

BURN SURPRISE STOCKTON IN MITCHELL FINAL
UNDERDOGS Burn won the Guy Mitchell Cup by beating HPH York Vale Cricket League division one leaders Stockton & Hopgrove by 30 runs at Selby on Sunday.
It completed a bad weekend for Stockton, whose advantage at the top had been cut the previous day by losing at Bishopthorpe.
Burn captain Ed Clark won the toss and elected to bat on a very placid Sandhill Lane wicket and the decision soon paid dividends.
Openers Ray Adamson (66) and Leigh Adamson (35) got off to an excellent start putting on 69. The rest of the Burn batsman continued to make steady progress finishing with 192-7. Rich Grimes was the pick of the Stockton bowlers with 3-48 from ten overs. Stockton made a poor start with four wickets down for 42 but Rich Kerrison kept his head while wickets fell steadily, going on to make 51.
At 100-8 it seemed Burn would claim an early victory but spirited batting from nine, ten, jack – Tom Williams (25), Matt Bradshaw (19) and Grimes (14no) kept Stockton in the hunt until the last wicket of Williams fell to an excellent catch low down at mid-on by Jamie Bingle off the bowling of Richard Miller.
Matt Smith had the best bowling return for Burn with 3-36 off ten economical overs.

RAMPANT YORK LIFT HEADLEY CUP
YORK, favourites for the HPH York Vale League division four title, won the Graham Headley Memorial Cup on Sunday, in emphatic fashion.
They crushed a young Heworth II side by 184 runs at Acomb and will make it a double by sealing promotion if they beat Ovington II at The Retreat this weekend.
York powered their way to 223-5 based on a 114-run fourth-wicket partnership between Kalum Ahmed (67no) and Kevin Mendham (67). Matthew Fairburn was the most successful Heworth bowler with 2-27.
Only Jamie Ingham (17no) could stand up to York’s rampant bowling attack as Heworth were blown away for just 39. In-form Richard Proctor took 3-10, Ahmed 2-5 and Ben Williams wrapped up the innings with two wickets in three balls.
This Sunday sees the Guy Mitchell Cup final between Stockton & Hopgrove and Burn at Selby.

HIRST HOPE TO DOUBLE UP
HIRST Courtney are on course for their second successive HPH York Vale League and cup double.
They hammered Thorpe Willoughby by nine wickets on Sunday in the Scothern Construction Cup final at Hemingbrough.
Now they will be aiming to close the gap on second division leaders Ovington in the race for the second division title with the meeting between the two sides on August 20 likely to be pivotal.
Last year Hirst won the division three crown and the Prendergast Memorial Trophy and now have already landed more silverware this season.
The toss at Hemingbrough was a good one to win and Hirst had little hesitation in inserting Thorpe Willoughby, who are themselves chasing for promotion from division three.
Thorpe struggled to get away slow bowler Kenny Winter (2-10 from 10 overs) and Chris Carden (2-27 from 10 overs) while Sam Dunn (3-22) had the best return. Thorpe subsided to 43-6 but finally managed to make 101 thanks to an unbeaten 37 by No 6 batsman Aidan Pearce.
The prolific Brian Howard (70no) didn’t take long to knock off the runs, dominating an opening stand of 97 before Phil Alford was out for 19.
Ian Scothern, of sponsors Scothern Construction, presented the trophy

CAVE WIN THEIR FIRST HPH CUP
NORTH CAVE have won the HPH Cup for the first time.
They ended Copmanthorpe’s hopes of a league and cup double by winning the final at Hemingbrough by 77 runs.
Cave were only in the final because Heworth, the side that beat them in the semi-final, were eliminated from the competition as the Elm Park Way outfit played ineligible players in that match.
The East Yorkshire side, who only joined the Vale League in 2007, made the most of their reprieve with a fine all-round display which favourites Cop could not match.
An outstanding innings of 80 by James Ferguson enabled Cave to total 193, Adam Mosely taking 4-42.
Andy Northfield (37) gave Copmanthorpe a flying start but the introduction of slow bowlers Mike Stellings (3-27) and John Buttle, who finished with excellent figures of 6-3-5-4 saw Copmanthorpe bowled out for 116.
The trophy was presented by Charles Walker, a partner with sponsors HPH, the York-based accountancy firm.
The outstanding Scothern Construction Cup semi-final was between the best two sides in division three, Thorpe Willoughby and York RI, and proved surprisingly one-sided.
RI were bowled out for 75 on their own track as four Thorpe bowlers - Lewis Smith, Jake Wild, Nadeem Shefta and Mark Seaman - took two wickets each before Smith (39no) saw them to a nine-wicket win. The only wicket to fall went to Sean Littlewood who returned fine figures of 7-3-9-1.
Thorpe will play Hirst Courtney in the final at Hemingbrough on Sunday (August 7).
North Duffield and Woodhouse Grange will contest the Prendergast Memorial Trophy at Pocklington on August 28.
Scott Shepherd (106no) struck his maiden century as Grange thrashed Goole Town by 130 runs in their semi-final. He shared a second wicket stand of 123 with Robert Daniel as Grange piled up a massive 271-2.
Goole were bowled out for 141, Grange having the luxury of using nine bowlers, Sam Shipley being the most successful with 3-22.
James Lacey was North Duffield’s matchwinner against Acomb, taking 4-30 and finishing undefeated on 61 from just 35 deliveries in a seven-wicket win. Callum Crawford top scored for Acomb with 37 while Adam Stroughair pounded a rapid 28 from 19 balls as the New Laners were bowled out for 125. John Patrick supporter Lacey's bowling with 3-26.
Lacey them took centre stage with the bat, caning ten boundaries and two sixes in his whilwind innings as Duffield won in the 25th over. Liam Scrimshaw was emerged from the carnage with credit, returning figures, conceding just 16 runs from his nine-over ration.
